Gum Disease- What do I do?

Gum disease also known as Periodontitis occurs when inflammation or infection of the gums (gingivitis) occurs and is not treated. Infection and inflammation spread from the gums to the ligaments and bone that support the teeth. Loss of support causes the teeth to loosen and eventually fall out.

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth decay in adults. This disorder is not common in young children, but increases during the teenage years.

Plaque and tartar build-up at the base of the teeth. The inflammation caused by this accumulation causes “pockets” or “holes” to form between the gingiva and the teeth. These pockets are filled with tartar and plaque. The inflammation of the soft tissue traps the plaque in the pocket. Continuous inflammation leads to tissue and bone damage around the tooth. Because the plaque contains bacteria, infection is likely to occur, and a dental abscess may also occur. This also increases the rate of bone destruction.

           Gum Disease symptoms are:
· Bad breath.

           · Gums that have a bright red or purplish red color.

           · Gums that look shiny.

           · Gums that bleed easily (presence of blood on the toothbrush, even if the brushing is done smoothly).

           · Gums that may be tender to the touch, but do not hurt.

           · Loose Teeth.

           · Inflamed gums.

The goal of treatment is to reduce inflammation, remove gum pockets and treat any underlying cause of periodontal disease. The rough surfaces of teeth or dental appliances should be repaired.

Have a complete dental cleaning. This may involve the use of various instruments or appliances to loosen and remove plaque and tartar from the teeth. Proper brushing and flossing are always needed, even after professional dental cleaning. The dentist or hygienist will show you how to brush and floss properly. You can get benefits from the use of medications that are put on the gums and teeth. People with periodontitis should have a professional dental cleaning every 6 months.

We are here at Dental Zone in Cleburne and can do a comprehensive exam and let you know how your gums are looking.

Should I take my infant to a dentist?

I have been asked about it several times so I think we will talk about it.

Seventy percent of parents mistakenly think that when their children still have baby teeth it is not necessary to go to the dentist. “Go only when it hurts”

On the contrary, Infants must be seen by a dentist at the age of 1.

The first dental visit is a new process of adaptation that the child experiences; one in which the child is shown the dental chair and all the Toys (tools) that the dentist uses, teeth are counted and checked if there are “sugar bugs” (Caries) living in their teeth.

It is also important that the little ones “knows” how many candies I can eat? “what candies are good for me? “is there a good time to eat cookies”.

Even if they do not have a toothache or parents believe that they are very young for the visit it is a good time for the children to correct bad oral habits and introduce early teeth brushing habits.

When the first tooth begins growing (between 5 to 12 months), you can start cleaning with a soft bristles toothbrush, and keep the use of the damp cloth in the areas without teeth.

When children have cavities, infections, or any other oral illnesses, the results can be negative, leading to deficiencies in nutrition, language development, pain, and often problems with their self-esteem. Healthy teeth and gums help children maintain good health in general, not just dental.

So again whether your child has Medicaid, insurance, or has no insurance it should not stop you from getting him a dentist visit in Cleburne before his or her first birthday.

           and yes... Happy New Year!
